I learned in 2007 that nothing comes as a coincidence. Some people may enter our lives in odd ways but it is intentional, and they often leave you with a significant mark on your outlook. ELLEN has left a tattoo.

Our good friend, Dick Wolfsie, thankfully introduced us to Ellen. Ellen is a sick young woman with an extraordinary story. She not only battles with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) but also Chron’s Disease, and Idiopathic Gastroperesis (among other ailments for which I am sure). She has a gastric pacemaker, has lost most of her vision, and at one point last Fall was given three weeks to live.

So…how did we get this incredible opportunity to photograph Ellen and her rock-of-a-husband, Kent, on an almost-Spring day? How does she look so beautiful? How is her smile so wide, her eyes gleaming? Ellen’s answer to Dick was…”My face isn’t sick! My insides are.”

However, after getting to know Ellen and Kent, I can tell you their story just doesn’t end with failing health. Considering our profession, I was most intrigued by how as newlyweds they have faced some of the darkest moments of their lives. Because after spending nearly 60 days in the hospital, Kent was laid off from his job. They are both now unemployed and face significant costs. However, they seem peaceful. They are pragmatic, educated, organized, and very positive. They also like each other quite well.

Ellen doesn’t venture to the movies often but was intrigued by the recent movie release with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman called the Bucket List. She figured she might as well develop her own. Dick got a hold of her list and figured we might be able to fulfill #18…”Have a session with a really good photographer.”

We learned that Ellen and Kent were married in a very small service in her parent’s living room without the typical hoopla of most weddings, including a photographer. They have only a handful of pictures during the entire relationship. The one picture they have hanging in their home from their wedding, everyone is looking in a different direction.

We were delighted to make this Bucket List item come to fruition. One of my favorite comments of the evening was when Ellen said to Kent softly, “This is better than having a photographer on our wedding day because I actually will always remember this.”

I especially want to thank our fantastic friend and makeup artist, Michelle Hage, for giving of her time and artistic abilities even when her husband was admitted to the hospital just few minutes before our session began. Jane from Plum’s Upper Room for letting us spend a beautiful evening together. And, most of all, Dick for helping us complete #18.

I have not been able to nearly capture the depth of Ellen’s story. I encourage you to read more on her blog. She is extremely active in educating others on Multiple Sclerosis and has touched thousands of people…even major Hollywood celebrities. An “Ellenpalooza” is being held on April 12th to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis. If I get more information on this event I will share it. In the meantime, enjoy!

These images, and our time with you, are nothing short of incredible. I can easily tell you my favorites.

Believe it or not, by the time I got home my temperature was 103. By Wednesday it was 105 and I remember NOTHING about that next day existing except for swallowing Tylenol. It has all manifested as sinus and ears – but I wanted to tell you to keep an eye on your families for me – just in case.

I had SUCH an amazing day, It was truly incredible. THANK YOU a thousand times over.

Much love and appreciation,
Ellen

Tiffany & Nate,
I can’t tell you how much our special day together and the images you captured means to me. I’m my own worst critic, but I look at those pictures and I see something that you don’t – you can’t. I felt horrible physically, but during that entire day I was energized by “number 18″ COMING TRUE.
You take many pictures of MANY beautiful people during special times of their lives…but I am willing to take a wild guess that few of them are going through the experience realizing that your fantastic work -alone, in and of itself – is a dream coming true. It wasn’t a wedding where I can look at the pictures, appreciate their beauty and be reminded of a special day….it wasn’t an event in and of itself where you took amazing pictures upon which I can later reflect. It was a DREAM alone, coming true. I don’t know how many people can say that the pictures by themselves remember that you made my dream come true.
Whenever that bucket is kicked – hopefully later than sooner – “number 18″ will be a memory where the laughs were genuine, the smiles came from the heart, I was captured with the person who is my soul mate, my “support person,” my jester, my counselor, my caregiver, the one who holds my heart and above all my champion. . .and a day where I met new friends in the two of you, Michelle and Dick. How could a person order anything more blissful and wonderful than that?
I may be a “gutless bag lady,” with burning legs and a dual master’s degree in “Advanced Napping” and “Falling on your face – breaking your nose with grace” but I am blessed beyond measure. Thanks to you I have a wonderful reminder of that.
I have always said that “the body is a temple, why not paint the walls? The plumbing is shot, the electrical system is on the fritz and the infrastsructure is crumbling.” So, I found it ironic that in your beautiful introduction in your blog, you said I left a tatoo. On my back I have (much to my mother’s dismay) some of the most important phrases or symbols that are a part of me – so I’ve had them tatooed there. On one shoulder blade, I have the Chinese symbol for perseverence. On the other, in Tibetan, I have “The Four Immeasurables” which Kent and I both wear (mine on my wrist, his around his neck). The Four Immeasurables are Love, Compassion, Joy and Equanimity. At the base of my spine, covering a scar from a surgical procedure, I have “Heart and Mind Heal the Body,” which is on a necklace that Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt gave me. Finally, below the base of my neck, I have Rabbi Hillel’s gem “I get up. I walk. I fall down. Meanwhile, I keep dancing.” (As you may be able to tell, I don’t discriminate by religion either! – and yes, I was a dancer) Some people wear their heart on their sleeve. . .I just happen to wear mine on my back!
I can never repay you for what you’ve done for me (unless you’d tell me the colors in your home and let me paint for you – that would make me so happy to do that. Even one of my little abstracts could go in your basement, closet, garage (if you don’t like it), & it would mean a lot to me to be able to share something I enjoy with you. Please consider it and let me know!

Thank you for being YOU, for sharing your talent with us and for a wonderful day. I hope that you will consider Kent and I to be FRIENDS. You are bright spots in my heart and I am a better person for knowing you. I’ll read your blog. pray for Tim’s safe return……and recommend you to EVERYONE I know.
Long story short (too late) – you are a special pair. Thank you for making a wish come true….and giving me so, so many happy memories to sustan my smiles on the days that are harder than others.
With much appreciation and love,
Ellen
